Special Achievement
Awardee inspires others
VIRGINIA BEACH,
February 7, 2008 -- Randolph Whitehurst of Pungo received
the Virginia Beach Rotary Club's Special Achievement Award
today during a special dinner in his honor.
"Life is about opportunities, and Randolph can be proud of everything he's taken on and accomplished," said Rotary Club President Wayne McCoy. "Given to a disability, Randolph has looked past that and has lived an eventful life, inspiring many people who know him."
Surrounded by his parents, sister and friends, Whitehurst proudly accepted the award.
Whitehurst has worked at Blooms (formerly Food Lion) since December 1992, and is currently learning new duties that include stocking and working in the bakery. He is also an entrepreneur, earning extra money by selling tomato boxes and other storage crates to farmers in Pungo.
Away from work, Whitehurst attends Blackwater Baptist Church where he serves as an usher. For more than two decades he's been involved with Special Olympics, competing in basketball and bowling. This year he'll try a new sport, Bocce.
"We are proud to present you with our Special Achievement Award," said McCoy. "You truly represent our motto -- service above self."
