Rotary International President, May Message

Soon after I was nominated to serve as president of Rotary International, I began planning a series of membership conferences in North America. Earlier this Rotary year, we held seven such conferences, each drawing between 200 and 600 participants. I chose North America as the setting because of the region’s recent alarming decline in membership as well as its large pool of qualified prospective members, many of whom are just waiting for an invitation to join. Rotary Foundation Message From Past President Sabol:

It is a wonderful time for us to reflect on the global reach of Rotary International and how we as Rotarians contribute to lives in our local community and in communities around the world. Without the Foundation, RI would not be able to establish such wonderful programs as the eradication of polio, the ambassadorial scholarship programs, and humanitarian and health programs. The Rotary Foundation is what sets Rotary and YOU apart from all other service organizations. Read more here.

Local Project Update:  President Wayne reported that Rotary District 7600 donated $1.4 million to local community projects throughout Virginia in 2007.  That is an accomplishment we all shared in and can be proud of.

Special Achievement Award Dinner
Randolph Whitehurst of Pungo received the club's Special Achievement Award on February during a dinner in his honor. "Life is about opportunities, and Randolph can be proud of everything he's taken on and accomplished," said Rotary Club President Wayne McCoy. "Given to a disability, Randolph has looked past that and has lived an eventful life, inspiring many people who know him." Read more here.

Rotary receives $100 Million Donation
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded The Rotary Foundation a challenge grant of $100 million to support Rotary International's PolioPlus program. Rotary will attempt to match the grant dollar for dollar over the next three years. This is the largest, single grant ever given to a volunteer organization and represents a tremendous validation of the approach and success of PolioPlus, one of Rotary's flagship programs since 1985. Rotarians have donated time, effort and $633 million to eradicate polio from the world. The program's success has wiped the disease off the planet, except in four countries. Let's work to see that this challenge grant accomplishes our goal -- 100% eradication of polio worldwide.

Interact Club
President Wayne would like to restart our Interact Club with a local high school. Anyone interested in participating in this program should talk with Wayne. The Interact Club would bring the principles of Rotary to high school students to better prepare them for their future professions. Interact Clubs provide the opportunity for students to interact with Rotarians and partner with Rotary Clubs on projects.
