Virginia Beach Rotarians spruce up Samaritan House

Rotary SpotlightVIRGINIA BEACH, May 3, 2008 -- It only took four hours, but the lasting effect will be much longer.

That's the amount of time 10 Rotarians from the Virginia Beach Rotary Club spent doing a variety of work during its first Paint Your Heart Out project of 2008 at a Hampton Roads Samaritan House.

As with each of these projects, the first ritual of the morning was enjoying Egg McMuffins and coffee compliments of McDonald's, topped off with a couple dozen of healthy Dunkin' Donuts.

That was all the warm-up needed, as the volunteers set to work and:
- painted two interior rooms
- cleaned the kitchen and other areas from top to bottom
- landscaped with clippers and edgers
- repaired the seats and painted a picnic table
- painted playground equipment
- bought parts, repaired and hung two swings
- de-weeded an overrun playground and topped it off with mulch

Paint Your Heart Out volunteers were:

- President Wayne McCoy (Senior Vice President, MSA Engineering)
- Jim Flinchum (Managing Principal, Bay Capital Advisors)

- Rene Flinchum (Bay Capital Advisors)
- Cliff Bateman (Vice President, Bateman, Gerling & Associates, Inc.)
- Pattie Phillips (Director of Finance, City of Virginia Beach)
- Bob Scott (former Director of Planning, City of Virginia Beach)
- Jim DeBellis (former Economic Development Director, Virginia Beach)
- Kathy Katsias (The Katsias Company)
- Bob Moseby (retired Pediatrician)
- David Rourk (President, Rourk Public Relations)
- Earl McDonald (retired Navy Master Chief)
- Eric Boudreau (Ameriprise Financial)

President McCoy said, "In just half a day, we have made life a little better for some people who are going through rough times. That's very rewarding. Jim Flinchum did a great job of coordinating this project, Cliff Bate did an excellent job with logistics, and the volunteers showed the true meaning of caring."
