Letter To The Editor, The Virginian-Pilot - 10/5/2011
Re “Donor beware,” front page, Oct. 2: Rotary International is made up of 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs throughout the world. Hampton Roads has more than 30 Rotary clubs. Rotarians form a global network of business, professional and community leaders who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities and the world. The Rotary motto is “service above self.”
The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported by voluntary contributions. Rotarians and Rotary clubs contribute approximately $100 million annually to the foundation’s Annual Programs fund. These funds are invested for three years, and the investment earnings are used to cover administrative and fund development costs. After three years, 100 percent of the contributions are used by Rotarians on programs, projects and grants to improve health, support education and alleviate poverty.
